Mamoru first appeared as Tuxedo Kamen to save Sailor Moon when she got scared during her first youma battle. Usagi frequently ran into him afterwards, and didn't know that Mamoru was Tuxedo Kamen until later in the series. Mamoru is the reincarnation of Prince Endymion, who was the prince of the Earth during the Silver Millenium. Prince Endymion was in love with Princess Serenity, but was killed by Queen Beryl. In her sorrow, Princess Serenity committed suicide, and Queen Serenity sent everyone to be reborn on Earth. Mamoru's parents died in a car crash when he was six years old, and Mamoru got amnesia. Mamoru can be cold and aloof, but he also is able to be warm and loving. Usagi becomes his girlfriend, and they love each other dearly.
In the SailorStars series, Mamoru decides to leave and go to America to study, as he was accepted into Harvard. Usagi goes with Mamoru to the airport to bid him farewell. After exchanging a few sweet-nothings, Mamoru gives Usagi a ring, and the two embrace with a kiss. However, this moment is cut short as Sailor Galaxia appears and steals Mamoru's Star Seed from behind. In shock, Usagi faints.
Mamoru's memory is recalled many times throughout the series, though his next physical appearance deeply shocks his hopeful girlfriend. Tuxedo Kamen was revived by Sailor Galaxia, and placed under her control, along with the rest of the Sailor Senshi, whose lives were also claimed by Sailor Galaxia. Tuxedo Kamen orders that Sailor Moon be attacked. When Sailor Moon finally finds the strength to destroy the shells of her friends, Tuxedo Kamen dashes into Sailor Galaxia's palace. In front of Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Kamen kisses first Sailor Galaxia's lips, then her brooch, then her feet. After a short battle, Sailor Galaxia leads Sailor Moon to the Galaxy Cauldron, where she makes Tuxedo Kamen throw himself into the Galaxy Cauldron.
When Sailor Moon finally defeats Sailor Chaos and enters the Galaxy Cauldron herself, she is greeted by all of her friends, including Mamoru. She chooses to live on Earth, and thus is transported back. She wakes up in bed with Mamoru. Mamoru and Usagi are soon married, to live happily ever after.
