Sailor Mars was the third soldier to be introduced, discounting Sailor V. Rei slapped an ofuda scroll on Usagi's head, mistaking her for an evil spirit. Later on, Rei was lured onto a bus by Jadeite. During the battle, which Sailor Moon was able to attend, Rei awoke as Sailor Mars. Rei is surrounded by an air of mystery. She is a priestiss at a Shinto temple, named the Hikawa Shrine. Rei is able to read fire to make predictions. She has a bit of a temper and can be quick to anger sometimes. In the SailorStars manga, Rei goes to a different high school than the rest of the Sailor Senshi, as she has private schooling.
Rei's first big appearance was at the concert that Sailor Iron Mouse attacked, which introduced the enigmatic Sailor Starlights. Sailor Iron Mouse felt the power of Sailor Crystals and attacked, causing everyone to transform. The Sailor Soldiers made vailant efforts to hold off Sailor Iron Mouse, and Sailor Star Healer defeats Sailor Iron Mouse. Without even an introduction, the Sailor Starlights leave.
After the appearance of Sailor Aluminum Seiren and the deaths of Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Mercury, Rei and Minako made the descision to confront the Three Lights in an attempt to discover whether or not they were the Sailor Starlights. Rei and Minako transformed in front of the Three Lights, and in turn the Three Lights transformed in front of the two girls.
Rei soon felt a disturbance at the Hikawa Shrine, and rushed over to find that Phobos and Deimos, her two loyal crows, had been killed by Sailor Lead Crow. Although Usagi successfully killed Sailor Lead Crow before she hurt either Sailor Mars or Sailor Venus, Sailor Galaxia quickly completed the unfinished business.
When Sailor Mars and Sailor Moon met again, they were not friends. Sailor Galaxia had revived the Sailor Senshi to do her bidding, and all attacked Sailor Moon until she found the power to overcome her emotions and eliminate them. When Usagi finally defeated Sailor Chaos and entered the Galaxy Cauldron, she met her friends again, back to their normal selves. After returning to earth, Rei became one of Usagi's bridesmaids for her wedding to Mamoru.
