Sailor Saturn was first introduced as Hotaru in the Infinity arc of the manga. She was a sickly girl whom Chibiusa made friends with. Due to the powers of the Taorian Crystal, Hotaru became the villian Misstress 9, which Hotaru's soul still existed inside. Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto wanted to kill Sailor Saturn because she is the forbidden soldier. Sailor Saturn can destroy the world easily with her attack Death Reborn Revolution. Sailor Saturn overcame Misstress 9 and became Sailor Saturn. Sailor Saturn destroyed the world, but Sailor Moon restored it with the Holy Grail. Sailor Saturn was then reborn as a baby, whom Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto took in. She reawoke as a Sailor Soldier in the Dream arc due to the new threat from the Dead Moon Circus.
Sailor Saturn doesn't play a principle role in the SailorStars arc. She is mostly seen with Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna whenever they're talking to Usagi. When Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna go to their castles to investigate the new enemy, their star seeds are taken by Sailor Galaxia. Hotaru is transported to Sailor Pluto's castle, where her Star Seed is also taken.
Sailor Saturn, along with the rest of the Sailor Team are revived by Sailor Galaxia. Sailor Moon is attacked by everyone, but she finds the strength in her to destroy the shades of her friends. Once Sailor Moon makes her way into the Galaxy Cauldron, she meets all of her friends who thank her. Usagi chooses to live on Earth, so everyone is sent there. Usagi is married to Mamoru, and each of the Sailor Team serve as a bridesmaid.
Hotaru's role in Chibiusa's Picture Diary was bigger than in the actual storyline. Hotaru meets with Chibiusa and her two overzealous friends, Naruru and Ruruna, to go shopping. Hotaru is taken to a curious pawn shop, where she sees Sailor Moon merchandise, and is bombarded by the brand-name longings of Naruru and Ruruna. A truck crashes into a warehouse and releases the ghost Otakura, who posesses Hotaru. Naruru and Ruruna appear and fruitlessly try and stop Otakura, then Sailor Moon makes her cameo and removes Otakura from Hotaru.
