Queen Serenity is the past mother of Usagi (Sailor Moon). She was the queen of the kingdom on the moon, and watched over Earth and guided it while it was developing. She is very sweet and caring, and loves her daughter Serenity more than anything.
When Queen Beryl and Queen Metallia, the main enemies in the first arc, began to rage war on the moon, Queen Beryl ended up killing Prince Endymion, the prince of the earth. In her sorrow, Princess Serenity committed suicide. This shocked Queen Serenity greatly, and she improperly sealed away Queen Metallia, causing her the ability to awaken in the future.
Queen Serenity explained all of this to Sailor Moon and the Guardian Sailor Soldiers (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus) when they visited the moon. Queen Serenity barely appears throughout the series, but she is a very important character.
